When thinking of award winning pictorial photography, the first name that comes to mind is Oscar Picazo. A Veracruz Mexico native, Oscar has had a major impact on the Las Vegas industry. His portfolio ranges from top models, magazine spreads, weddings, and so much in between. This week, Mike DeLucca got the opportunity to find out what makes everyone want their picture taken by the industry's favorite photographer, Oscar Picazo.
Tell me a little about yourself, and your photography background.
I studied Graphic Design at the University of Mexico, as well as received a Masters in Photography. I always liked graphic arts and I used to paint since I was a child. In Mexico I used to do painting exhibitions on galleries and museums, but now photography takes all my time!
In a city full of people claiming to be great photographers, how do you market yourself differently?
I know there are a lot of photographers out there, but when you work with your soul and passion, the result is going to be different because every soul and mind is unique. I don't do any marketing. My marketing is mostly referrals. The people are always contacting me because they saw my work some place.
Where does your inspiration come from? Is it different for every shoot?
My inspiration comes from everything. From a movie, painting, city, street, lights, etc. Beauty is everywhere. Of course when you see the model in person, automatically my mind starts to think about a concept, make-up, lights,etc.
Sometimes I think a photo is like a math problem that you have to solve! And yes, it's different every shoot, even when you try to do the same as a formula, it's never going to be the same. The model, the weather, the mood, everything affects the result.
Is it important to have a consistent style to be successful?
I don't know if it is important to have a consistent style to be successful, but I know it's really important to have a consistent quality!
It doesn't matter if it is a big production or not, or if the model likes you or not, you need to do your best!
Every girl in Las Vegas wants Oscar to shoot her. Why do you think this is?
I don't know! Maybe you have to ask them haha! The only thing that I know is if I were a model, for sure I would like my photos done by Oscar Picazo haha!
Is there anything specific you look for when selecting models?
It always depends on the concept or client. However, you know the same rules apply as the fashion industry: Tall, skinny, long neck and legs, etc.
What are your future goals? Where would you like to be in the next 5 years in your career?
Well I don't think too much in my future goals because i'm living my goal. So in my future I hope to keep working on the thing that I love to do, Images
